STOICISM
HOW TO LIVE HAPPY?
A spiritual approach
to let go

Catherine COLLOBERT, PhD
February - March 2023
via ZOOM - In French

DESCRIPTION

This seminar offers an introduction to Stoic philosophy and the spiritual exercises practiced by the Stoics.

It explores the ultimate goal of existence, defended by stoicism, as an ideal of peace and joy. Achieving this ideal requires profound spiritual transformation. This transformation goes through a theoretical knowledge of the principles that govern the universe and the human soul and daily spiritual exercises.

The combination of theoretical knowledge and spiritual exercises aims to heal our mind that is plagued by passions and ignorance, and to allow us to achieve inner peace and joy. Our mind can then become similar to "an impregnable citadel", according to the happy expression of Marc-Aurèle

WAY OF TEACHING

The seminar includes lectures, discussions and spiritual exercises.

WHY THIS SEMINAR ?

Philosophy is often reduced to a theoretical and speculative approach. This is to forget that Western thought is based on a Greek heritage whose heart is a spiritual approach and access to happiness in experience.

SPIRIT OF THE SEMINAR

The seminar is given in such a way that the content delivered can resonate in everyone's experience and allow them to deepen their own path of plenitude.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Catherine Collobert is a professor at the University of Ottawa (Canada). She specializes in ancient Greek philosophy and Buddhist philosophy and teaches meditation. She recently created with colleagues a program in contemplative studies at the University of Ottawa. She is a member of the Academy of Mindfulness and Contemplative Studies (University of Ottawa).

She has designed a course entitled “Ancient Wisdoms” which brings together Stoicism, Taoism and Buddhism. This course focuses on ethics and explores the conceptions of happiness, virtue, and freedom and the contemplative practices specific to these three traditions—practices conceived as essential to happiness.

She has been practicing meditation and yoga for nearly 15 years and has participated in numerous meditation retreats (medium and long term).

She recently wrote two articles that focus on the transformative aspect of contemplative practice in ancient Greek and Buddhist philosophy:

. “Upādāna and Svabhāva: their Coagency in the Entrapment of the Mind. A Madhyamaka Perspective”, Journal of International Association of Buddhist Studies, 45 2023.

. "Way of liberation, way of purification: the ideal of virtue in ancient Buddhism and in Plotinus", Dharma sans soi, dir. G. Davis and S. Hinzelin, Paris, Hermann, to be published in 2023.
